PULLMAN, Wash.** — In a thrilling double-overtime finish, Washington State secured a 54-52 victory over San Jose State on Friday night. Dylan Paine scored on a 7-yard run in the second overtime, and John Mateer followed it up with a successful two-point conversion to cap the wild comeback.
San Jose State's Emmett Brown responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Nick Nash, but under heavy pressure on the two-point attempt, Brown fumbled, and Washington State recovered to clinch their second consecutive 4-0 start under head coach Jake Dickert.
Washington State overcame an early 10-7 deficit, taking a 24-17 lead at halftime thanks to Mateer's 1-yard touchdown run and two touchdown passes to tight end Cooper Mathers. However, Brown led the Spartans to three straight third-quarter touchdowns, giving them a 38-24 lead entering the final quarter.
Mateer sparked Washington State's comeback with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams, followed by a 36-yard scoring pass to Josh Meredith after the Spartans turned the ball over on downs. A missed PAT left WSU trailing 38-37.
Kyle Thornton's interception set up Washington State at San Jose State's 32-yard line. Mateer connected with Meredith for a 31-yard gain, and Paine ran it in to give WSU a 43-38 lead, though the two-point try failed.
With just 26 seconds remaining, Brown hit TreyShun Hurry for a 20-yard touchdown and Nash for a two-point conversion, putting San Jose State ahead 46-43. Mateer, however, quickly led WSU into field goal range, setting up Dean Janikowski's 52-yard kick to send the game into overtime.
After both teams traded interceptions in the first overtime, Paine's run and Mateer's conversion sealed the game for Washington State.
Mateer threw for 390 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also rushing for 111 yards and a score. Brown completed 35 of 54 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns for San Jose State. Nick Nash had 16 catches for 152 yards and two scores, while Floyd Chalk IV added 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Spartans.
