ATLANTA — Patrick Mahomes knows he needs to improve, but the Chiefs remain unbeaten thanks to their strong defense. Mahomes overcame an interception to throw two touchdown passes, leading Kansas City to a 22-17 victory over the Falcons on Sunday night.
He credited his defense, which made crucial stops on fourth down in the closing minutes. “It’s a team game, and we’re winning,” Mahomes said, expressing optimism about their growth. The Chiefs (3-0) have won by a combined 13 points, despite not being perfect.
The Falcons (1-2), fresh off an upset over Philadelphia, started strong with a touchdown drive but failed to capitalize on key opportunities late in the game. Kirk Cousins completed 20 of 29 passes for 230 yards, including a touchdown pass to Drake London.
Mahomes finished with 217 passing yards, throwing touchdown passes to Rashee Rice and JuJu Smith-Schuster, while Harrison Butker contributed three field goals. Despite injuries affecting the Falcons' offensive line, they struggled to protect Cousins, who was pressured throughout the game.
A controversial no-call on a potential pass interference loomed large as the Falcons couldn't convert in the red zone. Looking ahead, the Chiefs will face the Chargers next week, while the Falcons will host the Saints.
